I do believe that I have totally outdone myself. I can't speak for the other 375 members of the flickr group but this was a lot of fun to create. I think we should all have to have one of these to hand out.

No more launching into useless "elevator speaches" when both parties know that neither is interested...
"You want to know my research interests? Let me give you my card.."

No more lengthy job interviews that ultimately end in "We'll call you"
"Want to know if we are a good fit - let's take a gander at the other cards in your pile..."

Things not working out with an employee - get together with other bosses for trade and negotiation sessions. "I'll give you one cataloger and two clerks for that adult services department head."

Friction-free info, indeed.

Tip of the mortorboard to Bettie for volunteering to help some researchers work on a definition of "high-level collaboration" and "low-level collaboration." She reiterated her interest by saying, "Yes, please do call me. I think that really sounds like fun."

I simply sat with my arms folded and looked at her. She put her head down and said, "I know, I know. I won."

My son wins the award this week. When I asked him if he was excited about Kindergarten starting next week he replied, "I'm so excited I can't even believe this is happening to me! It's like a dream...(shaking his head) it's like a dream."

Well, my stats professor did it again. He mentioned during class that he has been inside the SPSS* Headquarters in Chicago. He described the inside offices (underground and many stories up) and the proximity to the river and the subsequent massive leaking of said river into said underground offices.

Luckily, we determined that he was there for a conference and not on vacation. THAT would have been almost too much. Almost.....

*SPSS is a statistical software that Quantitative Researchers use to compile and analyze their data. It's full of lots of fun little tricks.

Geek of the Strip

Well this Unshelved comic strip just cracked me up!
Not only because it is funny - but because I have considered this as an alternate plan to trying to live on a librarian's pay.

If you are unfamiliar with the comic, it is a daily strip about life in a public library. The manager, reference librarian, young adult librarian and children's librarian deal with all sorts of issues concerning patrons, budgets and each other. Most of the time, the authors are right on. If most of my friends didn't already read this strip - I'd be forwarding it to them all the time.

Dewey definitely wins Geek of the Week for his attempt to remain in his profession despite the seemingly inevitable pay scale.

Work for books, indeed.

Geek of the Numbers

Geek of the week this week goes to my stats professor who is gets so excited FOR US when he is about to teach us something new. He gets a big grin on his face and jumps around the room and puts his arms out like he can transfer the knowledge bodily.

Who thought learning math could be so fun? He did!

Geek of the Month

My pal, mentor and former boss, Lesa, gets the big "Geek of the Week" nod today as not only was she mentioned BY NAME in an on-air radio book review but she was also awarded "Employee of the Month" for her entire library system. True "Geek" that she is, the mere nomination blindsided her. Imagine her shock when she was awarded the honor. I, on the other hand, read her nomination nodding and "yep"ping all the way through.

This August will mark 2 years since Lesa took the job in Arizona and since I've seen her. We've been out-of-sight of each other now almost as long as we were in-sight of each other daily. I miss her.

Her staff is lucky to have such a "Geek" among them and they know it. I was lucky enough to know it, too.

Geekdom

I've realized over the past 2 semesters that the simple fact that I am in a Doctoral Program for Library Science exceeds all geekiness I've seen thus far. All of the bright articulate people I am surrounded by are uberubergeeks. Several times a day I hear something that rings: Geek of the Week! in my head. Sometimes within the same hour.

So, I guess I will have to start with a baseline of "already supergeeky" and look for the people who outdo even themselves.

I'll keep my eyes open and keyboard ready.

A friend of mine, to whom we shall refer by his unintentionally geeky initials: PC (a steadfast characteristic of geek of the week is the unintentional nature of its recipients), won the label one week.

Upon close inspection, it was discovered that one of the reference desk computers had some fairly specific if not exactly interesting bookmarks saved to the browser. Regardless of how many times this station was logged off at night, the next time we checked - it was the same.

Turns out that our uber-talented reference librarian, PC, was carrying his personal bookmarks from computer to computer on a flash drive so he would never be without fishingismylife.com (or some other equally important past-time site). Each morning, he would import his bookmarks and then carry on with his day.

It is this sort of commitment to reference services (both to the customer's and to his own) that deems PC the geek of the week. Fish on.

Another day in the library. For once there were very few customers...perhaps it was before we opened. A clerk brought a book to the big boss and said, "Is this title miscataloged?" She took the title in hand and said, "Hmm, this is so much more a 793 than a 392." Now, for you sticklers, I may misremember the exact numbers...the point is that she is so wrapped up in her vocation - she can casually reference the Dewey decimal system in her discussion of a book topic. I'm pretty sure she can casually reference the system in relation to any topic in her everyday conversations. Commitment.

It was a normal day at the library. Everyone was busy with their assigned tasks. Heather and Viki were going through the daily mail separating lots of professional magazines, memos, county fliers for posting and advertisements. The occasional murmer between co-workers was suddenly broken by a shout.
The award goes to Heather G. for being so excited about a publication that came in the mail. I believe her exact words were, "The new assistive devises catalog is here!" She then started jumping up and down clapping her hands. Such enthusiasm.
Geek of the Week for sure.
